Infographic: How Terrorism is Growing in the Sahel
The Sahel region of West Africa is facing a dramatic rise in terrorism threats, with annual deaths due to terrorist activity growing more than 2,000 percent between 2007 and 2022, according to the 2023 Global Terrorism Index.
The increasing extremism is driven by widespread and complex insecurity, the report notes, including weak governance, ethnic polarization, ecological insecurity, state security abuses, pastoral conflict, political instability, food insecurity, and transnational crime, among other factors.
