Detained Abroad? What the U.S. Government Can and Cannot Do

International travelers are subject to the laws of the land, no matter their country of origin. While U.S. consular officials can help in some areas in the event of a U.S. citizen’s arrest abroad, they cannot offer a get-out-of-jail-free card—even in some cases of wrongful detention.

If traveling abroad, especially to a country the U.S. State Department designated as a high-risk for wrongful government detention, bear these tips in mind.
