Industry News December 2015

JOPLIN’S NEW HOSPITAL

Nearly four years after a tornado destroyed St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Missouri, the new Mercy Hospital Joplin opened its doors to patients earlier this year. The 2011 tornado resulted in 161 fatalities, more than 1,000 injuries, and billions of dollars in damages, including demolition of the former hospital.

The new $465 million structure features state-of-the-art medical technology, plus an up-to-date security system. C&C Group, a member of InsideIQ Building Automation Alliance, was selected to provide, program, and commission the video surveillance and access control systems within the new facility. The company provided more than 400 IP cameras and access control for nearly 700 doors, plus panic buttons, elevator controls, integration with the baby monitoring system, and 200 terabytes of video storage. Other features of the system include a security command center, photo badging station, and iris readers for access to critical areas.

The new hospital was built with storm-resistance in mind. For example, builders installed wind-resistant windows, and concrete finishes and a concrete roof help protect the exterior. Mechanical equipment resides in hurricane-proof areas at the top and in the basement of the hospital. Utilities are partially underground and inside 12-inch concrete walls covered with brick. Emergency generators can keep the hospital operating for up to 96 hours.
