Beyond the Drone: What It Really Takes to Build a Successful Security Drone Program

When most people think about drone security, they think about the aircraft. What drone should we buy? How far can it fly? What camera does it have?

Those are important questions. But after a year of operating remote drone programs nationwide, we’ve learned that the drone itself is only one piece of the puzzle.

The bigger challenge—and ultimately the bigger opportunity—is building an operation around it. Technology gets the attention. Operations determine success.

Without the ability to navigate federal aviation regulations, hire and train pilots, stand up an operations center, and acquire and maintain the necessary hardware and software, even the most advanced drone won’t leave the ground.

Here are eight lessons we’ve learned from a year of operating security drones at scale.

1. Start With Risk, Not Technology

Every successful security program starts with understanding what you’re trying to protect.

Are you looking to deter theft? Improve response times? Extend visibility across a large site? Support existing officers? Investigate alarms more quickly?


Drones are tools, and like any security technology, they are most effective when they support a broader security strategy.


The answers to those questions should drive how drones are used. In some environments, drones conduct routine patrols. In others, they’re dispatched only in response to alarms or suspicious activity.

Too often, organizations begin by evaluating hardware. But drones are tools, and like any security technology, they are most effective when they support a broader security strategy.

2. Navigating Evolving Federal Regulations

Federal aviation regulations remain one of the biggest barriers to scaling security drone operations—but they also help ensure those operations can be conducted safely and reliably. 

Today, commercial drone operations are governed by the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) Part 107 rules, which generally require a single pilot to maintain visual line of sight with the aircraft. Organizations seeking to operate drones remotely or have one pilot overseeing multiple drones must obtain FAA waivers demonstrating that they can maintain an equivalent level of safety.

Obtaining those approvals is far more than a paperwork exercise. As part of our Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) and one-to-many waivers, we were required to demonstrate robust operational procedures, including pilot training, quality assurance, emergency response protocols, and continuity of operations should systems fail.

The regulatory landscape is evolving, and the FAA’s forthcoming Part 108 rule is expected to establish a more standardized framework for BVLOS operations. Until then, organizations should view regulatory compliance not as a one-time hurdle, but as an ongoing operational responsibility. Building that discipline from the outset will position security programs to adapt as regulations continue to mature.

3. Your Operations Center Matters as Much as Your Aircraft

Remote drone operations depend on far more than a pilot with a controller and permission to fly. The operations center is mission control. It’s where operators monitor alarms, manage video feeds, coordinate responses, and ensure continuity when incidents occur. Because security incidents don’t happen on schedule, reliability matters.

Security managers evaluating drone programs should ask the following questions:

  • Is the operations center staffed continuously?
  • Are there redundant power and communications systems?
  • Is it UL-certified?
  • What procedures are in place if systems fail?
  • Can operators integrate drones with cameras, alarms, and other security technologies?


The drone may be the most visible piece of the program, but the operations center is the backbone that keeps it running.

4. Security Missions Require Security Professionals

One lesson that surprised us was how different security operations are from traditional drone operations. Flying inspections or collecting imagery requires one set of skills. Conducting security missions requires another.

Drone pilots for security operations need to understand:

  • Suspicious behavior
  • Alarm response
  • De-escalation and escalation procedures
  • Evidence preservation protocols
  • Communication with customers and law enforcement
  • How to make sound decisions under pressure
  • When intervention is appropriate and what form it should take (i.e. audio talkdown, contacting police, sending on-site security, or continuing to observe)


As one-to-many operations become more common, the drone pilot role increasingly resembles that of a security specialist and air traffic controller rather than simply a pilot.

That is why, if you’re trying to hire drone pilots for your security program, look beyond the certificate and their test score. Ask about their operational experience, how they handle emergencies, and the last time they had to make a judgment call mid-flight.

Technology matters, but people remain at the center of the mission.

5. AI and Analytics Make Scale Possible

One of the biggest advances in our program came when our pilots were authorized by the FAA to oversee multiple drones. That was great news—but it also introduced a challenge.

A pilot managing several aircraft can no longer watch every second of video. Instead, software and analytics must help identify activity that requires attention.

Analytics that leverage artificial intelligence (AI) have become essential for helping operators focus on events that matter rather than passively monitoring screens.

In one of our earliest drone deployments, AI software detected a group of people—not visible to the human eye scanning the frame—partially obscured through trees. The software notified the pilot of the suspicious activity, allowing the individual to take control of the drone to investigate and initiate an audio intervention that persuaded the trespassers to leave.  

As industry evolves, intelligent software will become every bit as important as the aircraft itself.

6. Fleet Management and Training Are Ongoing Responsibilities

Launching a drone program is complicated enough but maintaining one is another matter.

Different end users require different hardware and flight schedules, which means batteries, maintenance schedules, and wear patterns vary significantly. Pilot hiring, recruitment, and training also require careful management, planning, and intentionality.

As our deployments increased and the team of pilots grew, we quickly discovered that spreadsheets weren’t enough to manage certifications, recurrent training, maintenance schedules, and equipment health.

Remote operations also don’t eliminate the need for people on site. Establishing a point of contact at each location proved invaluable. Simple tasks like power-cycling a dock or returning a drone to its station after an unexpected landing become much easier when expectations were established ahead of time.

Like any mission-critical system, drones require discipline and maintenance to deliver reliable performance.

7. Drones Work Best as Part of a Layered Security Strategy

One of our biggest surprises has been how often customers combine drones with existing security resources. Initially, many people viewed drones as an alternative to security officers. In practice, we’re seeing the opposite.

Drones provide rapid response, aerial overwatch, and powerful deterrence. Officers provide judgment, physical intervention, and customer service. Cameras, radar systems, and remote monitoring add additional layers of awareness.

The most effective programs aren’t replacing people with technology. They’re finding the right blend of both.

Every site is different. Success comes from finding that Goldilocks balance where people and technology complement each other.

8. Flexibility Is a Competitive Advantage

Drone regulations, hardware platforms, and customer expectations continue to evolve.

Questions around BVLOS operations, emerging regulations, privacy expectations, and hardware choices will continue to change. What seems cutting edge today may become commonplace tomorrow.

That’s why we've learned to focus less on any single aircraft or technology and more on recruiting and training a skilled, agile workforce that can adapt to different platforms and technologies.

Just Because You Can Doesn’t Mean You Should

Many organizations are capable of building their own drone programs. But operating drones at scale means managing an aviation program—with all the training, maintenance, compliance, staffing, and liability that comes with it.

It’s a challenge the broader security industry is familiar with. Ultimately, organizations need to choose the path forward that works best to meet their operational needs with the resources they have available. The drone may be what people notice. But the real value lies in everything behind it.
