Fast Facts: Age Verification Apps Could Limit Access While Introducing New Security Risks
Many countries are considering age verification requirements to limit children’s access to online content and applications.
One leader in this movement is the European Union, which has created an age verification app that requires users to prove their age when accessing online platforms. President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen likened the process to stores requiring “proof of age for people buying alcoholic beverages in a shop.”
Von der Leyen said the EU’s application will respect privacy standards. But privacy and civil rights advocates have raised concerns about the risk associated with applications like the EU’s.
