Certification Profile: Jeremy Batcheldor, CPP

A career in security can begin long before it is named, shaped quietly by curiosity, exposure, and a desire to protect. For Jeremy Batcheldor, CPP, that path emerged through a series of formative experiences that transformed an early fascination into a lifelong vocation.

“As long as I can remember, I’ve been captivated by security,” he says. “I didn’t recognize it as a career at the time, but key moments throughout my life shaped how I think and ultimately set me on this path.”

Growing up with parents who encouraged learning through play, Batcheldor gravitated toward electronics and computers. Toy locks and Lego vaults soon evolved into bells tied to door handles and, eventually, to rudimentary electronic alarm systems. One memory stands out vividly: Batcheldor salvaged a magnetic reed switch from an old photocopier lid to build his first “real” alarm system.

Family influence reinforced those early interests. His father’s work exposed him to stories of espionage, sabotage, hacking, and heists. These narratives sparked a lasting interest in adversarial thinking. “That adversarial way of thinking remains one of my greatest strengths today,” he says.

A pivotal moment came during a teenage work placement at a local defense base information security center in his home country, Australia. There, Batcheldor encountered high-security alarm systems, learned about two-person integrity, and saw firsthand the importance of protecting classified information.

“That experience showed me that my way of thinking had a purpose and place in the world,” he says. Eventually, the passion became a profession.

As his career progressed, Batcheldor sought connection with others who shared his commitment to the field. ASIS International became that community.

“Attending ASIS events and seminars has broadened my understanding of emerging security challenges and best practice,” he explains. “These experiences push me to be more innovative and effective in my role. They encourage me to aim higher.”

Batcheldor’s involvement deepened when he was elected vice chair of the ASIS Australia Capital Territory (ACT) Chapter. The role offered insight into chapter governance and the delivery of meaningful programming, though what he valued most were the people—the chapter committee team, ASIS HQ, and the members made volunteering a joy, he says.

Professional development has been a constant thread throughout Batcheldor’s journey, culminating in his pursuit of the Certified Protection Professional (CPP) designation. “Achieving CPP certification was a natural next step in my commitment to professional development and mastery,” he says. “I pursued certification not just to validate my experience, but to challenge myself.”

The certification process expanded his knowledge across all domains of security, sharpened his problem‑solving approach, and exposed him to global best practices.  He credits the CPP with boosting his confidence, strengthening his credibility among peers and clients, and giving him the courage to take on more complex challenges. “It signals professionalism, rigor, and capability,” he says. Batcheldor also remains grateful for the support he received along the way, including a CPP scholarship from the ASIS ACT Chapter.

I pursued certification not just to validate my experience, but to challenge myself.

Today, Batcheldor serves as a consultant with Security Consulting Group in Australia, helping clients navigate complex security challenges.

“Each project is unique and solving those challenges continues to affirm my passion and purpose in this field,” he explains. In parallel, he runs a company developing novel detection and isolation products for ultra-secure environments.

Belonging to ASIS continues to shape Batcheldor’s professional identity. “ASIS helps me stay plugged into the evolving security landscape,” he says. “What I value most is the sense of professional community and access to an incredible pool of expertise. Personally, I can’t think of a greater source of resilience than a distributed community of exceptional thinkers united by a passion for protection.”

From childhood curiosity to professional excellence, Batcheldor's journey reflects the power of passion, community, and continuous learning—foundations that continue to guide his work in the security profession.

“Security is not static, threats evolve, and so must we,” he adds. “To stay effective, we must remain open to new ideas, committed to learning, and aware of our own limitations.”
