Industry News: Prepping for Smoother Flights in the Canary Islands with Multifocal Sensor Cameras

International Canary Islands Airport Uses Multifocal Sensor Cameras to Track Ground Operations

The international Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna Airport handled more than 6 million passengers in 2023, with most flights running between the island of Tenerife and the Spanish mainland or the other Canary Islands.

When the airport decided to update surveillance of areas with movement—wanting to detect, supervise, and record operations—it chose high-resolution video technology from German manufacturer Dallmeier, including Panomera multifocal sensor cameras. These movement areas include the runway, apron (the area where planes are parked, unloaded, loaded, refueled, and maintained), taxiways, and related service roads. Along with monitoring for security, surveillance offers analysis to support logistics and optimize business continuity.

The biggest challenge for the surveillance project was determining an appropriate location for the cameras because camera poles could not be installed within the movement areas, meaning the cameras had to be installed on existing buildings. The project would also have to work within the strict regulations the airport operates under, limiting the number of cameras and related infrastructure involved, which is why Panomera technology was selected for the project. The high-resolution, multifocal sensor cameras capture detail on near and distant objects, allowing for coverage of the areas with fewer units compared to conventional cameras.

The airport reported satisfaction with the project and its use, as well as with support from Dallmeier during the installation and after.
