GSX Daily 2024
Greetings from the Sunshine State! Our Security Management team will be reporting from Orlando, Florida, for the next week to share new security trends, educational opportunities, and networking activities at GSX 2024.
If this is your first GSX, or even your 10th, we recommend downloading the GSX app (Apple users here, Android users here); double-checking your inbox to ensure Security Management is on your contacts list so you don't miss the GSX Daily newsletters; and following us on Twitter/X and Instagram.
Below are some sneak peeks at what's in store once GSX officially begins on Monday, 23 September. We'll also be sending a daily email full of insights on how to make the most of your time in Orlando.
Using AI for good. In a GSX keynote on Tuesday, Harvard Business School executive fellow and co-founder of Blue Tulip Ventures Rana el Kaliouby shared how artificial intelligence (AI) technology can be leveraged in positive ways and the role security practitioners can play in the process. Read "el Kaliouby: Humans Can Leverage AI to Improve the World."
Human-centric security. Carlos Francisco, CPP, spent more than two decades climbing the ranks in security at Walt Disney World Resorts, learning how to balance situational awareness, de-escalation, and customer service. Now, he joins the GSX Daily edition of SM Highlights to discuss the human-centric security culture that led the world-class environment for guests at the “Happiest Place on Earth” and how to apply those lessons across the security management profession. Subscribe and listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, and Spotify.
Factoring in climate risk. In a Wednesday Game Changer session at GSX 2024, security practitioners Tracey Durner, Nicole Persaud, Rawlings Miller, and Larry Fitzgerald, CPP, PSP, will share how to use Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) as a framework for a global strategy to address risk. Read "How to Use ESG as a Global Strategy to Address Risk."
Active defense. Former Finland Prime Minister Sanna Marin called on the private security sector to be active participants and defenders against authoritarian regimes and the larger threats that face the world today in an address at GSX 2024. Read more about her remarks "Marin: Be an Active Defender Against Authoritarianism to Address Global Threats."
Mapping a resilient path. Where do climate and security intersect today? Amanda McCarty, director of the Climate Ready Nation initiative at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), joins the SM Highlights podcast to talk about how climate change is a “destabilizer” for organizations and individuals worldwide and how scientists are reevaluating what they measure to track new effects and map a path to resilience. Subscribe and listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud, and Spotify.
Managing amid mistrust. In a GSX Game Changer session on Tuesday, 24 September, Diana Concannon, PCI, will guide attendees through today’s tangled trust landscape. Discussion points will include how mistrust can threaten security efforts, how technology factors into trust and mistrust, and the role of human nature in combatting future mistrust. Read "How to Manage Amid Mistrust: Lessons on Communication, Values, and Human Nature."
Lessons from Finland. Former Finland Prime Minister Sanna Marin will share at GSX 2024 the role democratic alliances have in facing significant threats, following a transformative period that pushed Finland to join NATO. But what makes Finland an ideal case study in the role of geopolitics in corporate security? Find out in "Lessons from Finland: Building Security Through Trust in Institutions."
Know your worth. In this special GSX 2024 edition of the SM Highlights podcast, sponsored by Sign In Solutions, Orange County Convention Center Security Administrator Earl Biggett, Jr., CPP, shares some career advice—especially for people changing from the public to the private sector—and how working in concierge security positions changed his approach to his job and security technology. Listen to the episode and subscribe to our podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or SoundCloud.
Crisis Leadership. You can plan for hundreds of different threat scenarios, but adversaries will find a way to surprise you. Just ask U.S. Navy Commander (ret.) Kirk Lippold, the USS Cole's Commanding officer when suicide bombers attacked the ship on 12 October 2000. At GSX 2024, Lippold will share why leadership skills are an investment everyone must pursue, leaning on integrity and forethought to succeed. Read "Lippold on Crisis Leadership: Act in the Moment, Think in the Long-Term."
Facilitator-in-Chief. Words have power. They can inspire, influence, and compel. They enable speakers to grab an audience's attention, draw connections, and forge community. This year at GSX, general session attendees can experience this for themselves through spoken word artist Charity Blackwell, the 2024 facilitator who will open new channels of innovation and bring the ASIS International strategic vision to life. Read "Facilitator-in-Chief: Spoken Word Artist Charity Blackwell Finds the Thread on GSX Themes."
New on the Show Floor. Want insights on the latest security technologies, services, and solutions to be displayed at GSX 2024? We have you covered! Read our special "GSX 2024 Product Showcase."
Knocked down, but not out. Organizational resilience is increasingly intersecting with the work security practitioners are doing to ensure business continuity and success. Learn from experts RC Miles, CPP, and Maribeth Anderson, MPA, CSP, about how to build resilience at your organization in this Monday Game Changer session. Read our session preview "How to Build Resilience at Your Organization."
Keeping the conversation going. You came to GSX to learn, but you also came to connect. After the show wraps each day at the Orange County Convention Center, keep the conversation going at a few local spots that the GSX Host Chapter, ASIS Orlando, recommends. Find them in "Where to Network and Eat in Orlando During GSX."
Next stop, Dublin. Ireland will host the next edition of ASIS Europe: From Risk to Resilience, Europe's leading gathering for established and aspiring security leaders. Read a preview of what to expect at the event, as well as how to submit content, in "Discover Dublin at ASIS Europe 2025."
