Industry News: Enhancing Technology and Security During Renovations at Roosevelt Island
Renovating Roosevelt Island
Sportspark is a recreational facility on Roosevelt Island—located in the East River between New York City and Long Island—providing the community opportunities to exercise, swim, and play. Originally opened in 1977 and operated by the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), Sportspark was in need of some serious renovations.
“Over time, it had deteriorated significantly, necessitating a well-capitalized overhaul,” said RIOC President Shelton Haynes.
When renovations started in 2021, RIOC decided to collaborate with technology solutions provider Elite Design Systems (EDS) on a year-long multimedia project that would end up reaching beyond Sportspark and into the larger community. The project involved a wide range of installations and enhancements, including implementing wide area network (WAN) and local area network (LAN) infrastructure to improve communications and connectivity, digital signage solutions, audio and visual technologies for user experiences, and surveillance coverage that encompassed the entire island. The project also covered key locations, including the new Sportspark facility, the youth center, Roosevelt Island’s police station, the Mosaic Church, RIOC’s operating center, and even an iconic lighthouse.
