Industry News: NYC’s Penn Station Gets Upgraded Audio Communications Solutions

NYC’s Penn Station Gets Upgraded Audio Coverage

When New York City’s main intercity and commuter rail station was building its latest expansion, Moynihan Train Hall, in 2021, it installed audio and emergency communications technology from AtlasIED.

The station is the busiest transportation facility in the Western Hemisphere, with more than 700,000 passengers bustling through the station and the Moynihan Train Hall every day. One of the essential requirements of the new hall was compliance with NFPA 72 audibility and intelligibility fire codes—ensuring that a facility provide and maintain a threshold for live or pre-recorded messages, specifically 15 decibels above ambient sound levels. Along with using architectural features and traditional solutions like loudspeakers to achieve this, a mass communication system from AtlasIED was also integrated, which manages the flow of announcements.

Beyond facility-wide announcements, the system, GLOBALCOM IP-116-D-CS, also helps manage messages between network endpoints, including digital communication stations, zone controllers, network power amplifiers, and other types of IP endpoints throughout the train hall. Other AltasIED products supported a variety of logistics and security functions, such as signal automation for installed loudspeakers, initiating passenger-facing announcements, and an option for the security center to issue announcements.
