Preparations for Two High-Profile Murder Trials Proceed
This week featured news from two separate court proceedings as prosecutors continue to prepare to try the people accused of killing two high-profile individuals. Here is what you need to know about the New York case where Luigi Mangione is facing trial for allegedly murdering United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson and the Utah case where Tyler Robinson is accused of murdering conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
New York Trial of Luigi Mangione
State Supreme Court Judge Gregory Carro issued a ruling on 18 May after a pretrial hearing on evidence in the case.
Mangione will be tried for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was killed on a New York City street on 4 December 2024. Mangione allegedly fled the scene that day and was apprehended five days later in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The focus of this pretrial ruling was on the events that happened in Altoona. Defense argued that Mangione’s backpack was the subject of an illegal search by police and that many comments Mangione made were inadmissible because he had been informed of his Miranda rights.
The evidence presented in the hearing included police body cam footage of the scene at a McDonald’s restaurant where police first approached Mangione and video of his booking at the police station.
Carro’s ruling was a mixed bag. Police searched the backpack in the restaurant and found a gun magazine, cellphone, passport, wallet, and thumb drive, among other items. Carro ruled that the items discovered during this search as well as some of Mangione’s pre-arrest comments were inadmissible.
However, police made a more thorough search of the bag after Mangione’s arrest and discovered a 3D-printed gun as well as a notebook, which was described as a manifesto. Carro ruled that these pieces of evidence were admissible, giving prosecutors what they say is the murder weapon and motive.
The trial for the state case is scheduled to begin on 8 September. The most serious charge against Mangione is second-degree murder, which carries a sentence of between 25 years and life imprisonment.
Federal prosecutors have also charged Mangione with murder, however a federal district judge, Margaret Garnett, disallowed some other charges which would have combined with the murder charge to allow the death penalty. The federal murder charge carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. In the federal case, all of the contents of the backpack were admitted as evidence.
The federal trial is scheduled to start on 13 October. Mangione has called the two trials double jeopardy.
The murder of Thompson sparked a renewed emphasis on corporate executive protection. Since the incident, ASIS has conducted survey research on executive protection practices, released an ANSI-accredited Executive Protection Standard, and has had extensive coverage of executive protection in Security Management, including a collection of articles in January 2026, additional coverage of the executive protection research, and a focus on protecting female executives.
Utah Trial of Tyler Robinson
Conservative commentator and leader of Turning Point USA Charlie Kirk was shot and killed during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University on 10 September 2025. Just over a day later, police arrested Tyler Robinson on suspicion of aggravated murder of Kirk.
Earlier this month, Utah District Judge Tony Graf ruled against Robinson’s attorney’s attempts to ban cameras from the Utah courtroom that is considering whether prosecutors have a strong enough case against Robinson to proceed to trial.
Defense attorneys were back at it on 19 May, this time asking Graf to consider keeping parts of the preliminary hearing under seal because it could cause prejudicial bias of prospective jury members.
Graf said he would rule on the new defense request by 1 June. The preliminary hearing is currently scheduled for 6-10 July.
Since there has not yet been a preliminary hearing, Robinson has not entered a plea against the accusations. Prosecutors have said they intend to seek the death penalty in the case.
The murder of Kirk is part of a rash of political violence in the United States, most recently an attack at a function where President Donald Trump was speaking in late April. A year ago, two Minnesota state legislators were attacked, one fatally, and an arsonist set fire to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s house.
