Fast Facts: The Elements of Audience Impression

Giving an effective and persuasive presentation is a crucial skill for security professionals moving upward in their careers. But it goes beyond knowing your data or key performance indicators, and it’s not just about speaking clearly. There are nonverbal elements at play here, too.

“When presenting to a group, you may tend to focus the majority of your energy on the content of the presentation. You will outline the content, design slides to go along with it, and feel like you are ready to go,” according to a new ASIS Upskill learning module, Presentation Skills. “It’s important to know how critical other seemingly peripheral aspects of the presentation truly are.”

One of the module’s sections, “Key Presentation Skills: Balancing Verbal and Non-Verbal Messages,” focuses on the need for balancing style and substance, the importance of body language, the impact of tonality in nonverbal communication, and the importance of physical appearance.

The learning module, Presentation Skills, is currently available to the public through ASIS International’s Learning Exchange.
