The new ePassports were released in January 2019. Each card's polycarbonate data page contains microprinting, a background of the national flag and emblem of Hong Kong—the Golden Bauhinia Square—and a foreground with a laser-engraved photo of the cardholder. The smart ID card features built-in RFID technology and high-resolution photographs that support facial recognition software, in addition to a distinctive background of the city's skyline visible only under ultraviolet light.
