Industry News: July 2014

RFID ENABLES ACTION SHOTS

At Princeville Ranch Adventures in Kauai, Hawaii, nine zip lines send visitors gliding over treetops and across spectacular terrain. To help visitors capture the experience, Princeville works with Snapsportz Media, Inc., a company that specializes in using RFID technology to create images of people engaged in active pursuits.

The harsh environmental conditions at the ranch—intense sunlight, heat, winds, and heavy rain—combine with the remote terrain and strong sanitation procedures to make Snapsportz’s usual RFID solutions fail. The company worked with A.C.C. Systems and HID Global to find a durable RFID tag that would trigger cameras positioned along the course and enable the software to sort images for each guest. HID Global SlimFlex tags with thermoplastic elastomer housings are now riveted onto the helmets of visitors and provide excellent performance.

In addition to increasing revenue for the ranch—both from photo sales and from having satisfied clients post the photos on Facebook and review sites—the application of this technology earned Snapsportz a runner up award for Most Innovative Use of RFID from RFID Journal.
