06/10/2014 -Onestudent was killed and one employee was injured in a school shooting this morning at a high school near Portland, Oregon, on the final exam day of the spring semester. The alleged shooter was also confirmed dead by the local sheriff's department and was the sole person responsible for the shooting. Police responded to reports of shots fired at Reynolds High School in Troutdale at 8:07 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to a statement released by the Multnomah County Sheriffs Office. Multiple agencies responded to the report and tactical teams worked to evacuate students and staff members from the school. The shooter acted alone and authorites said that the gunman used a rifle.

Sue Strickland of the Troutdale Police Department told USA TODAY that there were 40 to 50 units that responded to the call and that several SWAT teams were checking the building to make sure things were under control. Agents from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) were also dispatched to the scene at approximately 9:40 a.m. and arrived on the scene shortly after. It was not clear why they were dispatched.

During a second press conference this afternoon, local authorities said that police were continuing to investigate the situation and would release more details as they are confirmed. A spokesman from thesheriff's office said authorities werestill contacting thenext of kin of thestudent who was killed in in the incident. Once the family has been notified, the student's name will be made public.

The employee who was injured in the shooting was treated at the scene for non-life threatening injuries. However, the name of the employee was also not released.

In a separate incident, while police were evacuating students and staff members from the high school an individual was arrested for possessing a firearm. However, authorities do no believe that the individual had any role in the shooting and did not offer any additional details during the press conferenceabout the person's arrest.

Reynolds High School is about 12 miles east of Portland in Troutdale and is one of the largest schools in the area withapproximately 2,800students in grades 9 through 12. Most of the seniors at the high school were preparing for graduation on Thursday and were not on campus, The Oregonian reports.

The school will remain closed and people will not be allowed to remove possessions or vehicles from the property until the various law enforcement agencies have completed their investigations.
