SUPER BOWL SECURITY

Government officials pulled out all the stops to provide security for February’s Super Bowl XLVIII at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Designated a level-one security event, the game was protected by government and private entities, along with the latest in technology.

Private security detail for the event was overseen by S.A.F.E. (Security, Athletic Facilities & Events) Management, a company that specializes in events at such venues. Mobile Pro Systems (MPS) provided video surveillance trailers to the New Jersey State Police for use on game day and at events before and after. The trailers combined detection technologies with vision analytics to provide alerts on-site and remotely when suspicious actions occurred. The units were wirelessly linked via a mesh network from Fluidmesh Networks. The Fluidmesh-equipped MPS trailers also helped authorities communicate in the crowded stadium, where thousands of cell phones tested the capacity of the enhanced cellular and Wi-Fi infrastructure provided for the event.

Powell and Huntsman to Headline at 60th Seminar and Exhibits

More than 20,000 professionals worldwide from both the traditional and in­formation security disciplines are anticipated to attend the ASIS International 60th Annual Seminar and Exhibits in Atlanta, September 29 to October 2. Just announced are the keynote speakers for this, the biggest annual security conference in the world. On Tuesday, September 30, attendees will hear former Utah Governor Jon M. Huntsman, and on the following day, Wednesday, October 1, former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell will give the morning keynote.

Huntsman. Governor Jon M. Huntsman, Jr., began his career in public service as a staff assistant to President Ronald Reagan. He has since served four U.S. presidents in critical roles around the world. Huntsman was ap­pointed deputy assistant secretary of commerce and United States Ambassador to Sing­apore by George H. W. Bush. He also served as ambassador to Singapore from 1992 to 1993, as deputy assistant secre­tary of commerce for Asia, U.S. trade ambassador, and most recently U.S. ambassador to China, where he served from 2009 to 2011. In 2012, he stood as a candidate for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

In January 2014, Huntsman was named chair of the think tank The Atlantic Council. Additionally, he serves as cochair, along with Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), of No Labels, a growing citizens’ movement dedicated to promoting the politics of problem solving. He also hosts a weekly radio program on SiriusXM, “No Labels Radio with Jon Huntsman.”

Twice elected as Utah’s governor, from 2005 to 2009 Huntsman brought about strong economic reforms, tripled the state’s rainy day fund, and helped bring unemployment rates to historic lows. During his tenure, Utah was named the best managed state in America by the Pew Center on the States, as well as best state in which to do business. Huntsman was elected as chair of the Western Governors Association while serving as governor. He was also a member of the executive committee of the National Governors Association.

As deputy U.S. trade representative, Huntsman launched global trade negotiations in Doha in 2001 and guided the accession of China into the World Trade Organization.

Huntsman currently sits on the board of Ford Motor Company, Caterpillar Cor­poration, Huntsman Corporation, the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, and the University of Pennsylvania, and he is a distinguished fellow at the Brookings Institution, a trustee of the Reagan Presidential Foundation, a trustee of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and chair of the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. He has served as a visiting fellow at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government as well as a distinguished lecturer at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy.

Powell.For more than 50 years, General Colin L. Powell (U.S. Army-Ret.) has devoted his life to public service. Having held senior military and diplomatic positions during four presidential administrations, Powell is deeply committed to democratic values and freedom.

The son of Jamaican immigrants, Powell was born in Harlem, New York City, in April 1937 and was raised in the South Bronx. He was educated in New York City public schools, and he attended the City College of New York (CCNY) where he earned a Bachelor of Science in geology. It was not until Powell joined the Army ROTC program at CCNY that his military career was launched. He received a commission as an Army second lieutenant upon gradu­ation in 1958 and served for 35 years, rising to the rank of four-star general.

From 1987 to 1989, Powell served as President Ronald Reagan’s national security advisor. From 1989 to 1993, he was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton, and was not only the youngest officer and first ROTC graduate to serve in the position but also the first African American. During his time as chairman, Powell oversaw 28 crises, including the Panama intervention of 1989 and Operation Desert Storm in the 1991 Persian Gulf War.

Under President George W. Bush, Powell was appointed the 65th secretary of state. As secretary of state, he led the State Department in major efforts to address and solve regional and civil conflicts in the Middle East, Sudan, Congo, Liberia, the Balkans, Cyprus, Haiti, Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, and Iraq. In all of these arenas, he used the power of diplomacy to build trust and forge alliances to help transform these unstable regions into areas where societies have the potential to prosper. He also worked at the forefront of American efforts to advance economic and social development worldwide.

Among the many U.S. military awards and decorations that Powell has received are the Defense Distinguished Service Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Soldier’s Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Purple Heart. His civil awards include two Presidential Medals of Freedom, the President’s Citizens Medal, the Congressional Gold Medal, and the Secretary of Energy Distinguished Service Medal. In addition, he has received awards from more than two dozen countries that include a French Legion of Honor and an honorary knighthood bestowed by Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain.

Powell is the Founder of the Colin L. Powell Center for Leadership and Service, which was established at his alma mater, CCNY. The center’s mission is to develop a new generation of publicly engaged leaders. He is also the founder and chair emeritus of the America’s Promise Alliance.

Currently, Powell is a strategic limited partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, the renowned Silicon Valley ven­ture capital firm, and is on the board of Bloom Energy. He is the chairman of the advisory board of Leeds Equity Partners and chair of the Eisenhower Fellowships, a cross-cultural program for emerging international leaders. Powell is a member of the board of directors of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is also a member of the executive leadership cabinet of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial and is the honorary chair of the education center for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. He also serves on the board of the Smithsonian Institution’s African American Museum of History and Culture. He has previously served as a member of the board of trustees of Howard University, the board of directors of the United Negro College Fund, and the board of governors of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Powell’s autobiography, My American Journey, was a best seller and has been published in more than a dozen languages. Powell’s second book, It Worked For Me, was a New York Times best seller.
