​Building the Future of ASIS

Senior volunteer leaders from ASIS International councils, chapters, commissions, committees, and boards gathered at the annual Leadership Exchange at the Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City in Arlington, Virginia, USA, to discuss the Society's strategic priorities and vision, while sharing leadership techniques and experiences.

At the January meetings, attendees engaged with the Board of Directors in an interactive town hall, learned about the ASIS 2020–2024 strategic plan, and participated in a series of innovative leadership workshops. The event also provided opportunities for meetings of groups such as the Board of Directors, the ASIS Foundation Board of Trustees, the Professional Certification Board, the Commission on Standards & Guidelines, and the CSO Advisory Council.

With member-led sessions, including "The Art of Being a Volunteer," "Global Success Stories," "Chapter Bootcamp," and more, Leadership Exchange offered attendees examples of tactics they can implement to provide value to ASIS members.

The conference also featured remarks from President Christina Duffey, CPP, at the Annual Membership Meeting, in which she outlined key strategic priorities for 2019:

• Laying the foundation for a new global governance structure
• Launch of the 2020–2024 strategic plan, which revolves around the pillars of accelerating digital transformation, achieving recognition for the security profession, elevating the security function to influence organizational success, and serving global needs
• Strategic succession planning
• Conclusion of the CSO Commission charter—to determine the benefit to members of integrating a CSO position into headquarters staff.

She stressed to attendees the importance that ASIS keep an eye on the future. "Reaching the next generation of security leaders globally is critical for our organization's success," she added. "I challenge each of you to get involved and become a mentor to the next generation—to help advance our profession and ASIS."

ASIS celebrated the exceptional work by its volunteers, recognizing:

• Robert Baggett, CPP, PCI, PSP, as Council Chairperson of the Year for his leadership of the Academic and Training Programs Council, overseeing its merger with the Leadership and Management Practices Council to form the Professional Development Council.
• Larry Stanley, CPP, as Regional Vice President of the Year for his oversight of Region 2G—covering Kentucky, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, and West Virginia.
• Enrique Tapia-Padilla, CPP, as Senior Regional Vice President of the Year for his work growing ASIS International throughout Group 7 (Latin America).

Featuring arcade-style games and Chicago-inspired food items, the Taste of Chicago Festival gave attendees a preview of the fare members will enjoy when Global Security Exchange (GSX) convenes in the Windy City this September.

At Leadership Exchange's concluding social event, the President's Reception, ASIS formally celebrated the beginning of Duffey's term as president with the ceremonial passing of the flag from 2018 President Richard E. Chase, CPP, PCI, PSP.

ASIS leaders departed with plenty of takeaways for improving the member experience for 2019 and beyond.
