In honor of Women's History Month, ASIS International is spotlighting the powerful ways our chapters are celebrating Women in Security (WIS). We spoke with Valarie Acree, Chair of the Greater Atlanta Chapter and Jessica Monroe, WIS liaison for the Orange County chapter about their recent Chapter events, including a screening of the Women in Security Documentary followed by a panel discussion and networking, and a Galentine’s event centered around sharing security “love languages.” Both women shared not only how their chapters are elevating women’s voices in security but also the advice they would offer to other chapters ready to host their own WIS events.

What are the greatest takeaways from these WIS initiatives?

The screening of the Women in Security Documentary in Atlanta sparked meaningful conversations and connections, bringing women’s voices, experiences, and leadership to the forefront. Women from across the security space, spanning physical security, cyber security, and both the public and private sectors joined the event and contributed to rich post-screening discussion. “Visibility and representation make a real difference and creating these spaces can have a real impact on how people see themselves and their future in this profession” says Acree. “These events can do more than inspire in the moment. They can strengthen relationships, deepen engagement, and help move the profession forward in a meaningful way."

The Galentine’s event in Orange County centered around sharing “security love languages” — best practices they have been using in their own organizations. Participants shared meaningful discussions and fostered cross-sector connections. The event’s breakout-style format encouraged deeper engagement and thoughtful input from all attendees.

Both events also welcomed male allies from across the profession. “True friends and peers that are allies to women in security and will speak up for us when we’re not in the room” Monroe says. These conversations strengthened professional ties while building more connected and collaborative WIS communities.

What advice would you give other chapters who are interested in hosting their own WIS event?

Both Acree and Monroe emphasized the importance of leading with intention and encouraged other ASIS chapters to host their own WIS events, creating space for connection and community building, no matter the size or starting point.

Chapters looking to expand their WIS efforts can explore a variety of formats, there is no one-size-fits all approach for a successful program. “I used to think there weren’t enough women in our local chapter to have an event, but each one has continued to grow," says Monroe. “The community is so supportive, appreciative, and fun.” From breakout discussions to skill-sharing workshops, to virtual coffee chats or local networking meetups, chapters can create impact in various ways. ASIS International’s Mentor Match program also serves as a powerful tool for connecting professionals across the security profession. Learn more about the Mentor Match program here.

They’ve found that WIS events offer both an inclusive and welcoming environment for women and encourage other chapters to focus on creating an experience for their WIS communities. “The impact lasts well beyond the event itself and helps break down the silos women cannot afford to navigate alone” says Acree. “Think about what you want attendees to learn, feel, and take with them. Strong partnerships, thoughtful planning, and authentic messaging make a difference”
