Paul Cushman, Corporate Security Director, Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium,  sat down with us to discuss his upcoming exclusive webinar exploring risk assessments. To learn more about the webinar on 18 February or  to register, visit here.

Q: How did you become interested in risk assessments?

A: I had the benefit of stepping into a security leadership role that had already completed a comprehensive security vulnerability assessment and was poised to complete a 5 year follow up assessment months after my arrival. These assessments have been instrumental in shaping our security program and have provided a roadmap of success.

Q: What advice would you give security professionals interested in risk assessments?

A: We tend to get so used to and comfortable with our facilities and programs that although we “know” we have gaps, we overlook them and get comfortable and complacent, preventing us from actually identifying them. A fresh set of eyes can be an invaluable tool to help us improve. Don’t let your ego get in the way.

Q: Why should security professionals have risk assessments on their radar?

A: Organizations are investing a lot of time and money in their security programs. A SVA allows you to prioritize and focus those limited resources. It builds on your strengths and identifies your areas for improvement. It adds credibility to your program and serves as an outside, credentialed voice supporting you in your mission.
