Mike Lavway, CPP sat down with us to discuss his upcoming exclusive webinar exploring systems migration considerations. To learn more about the webinar, sponsored by ZBeta, on 4 September or to register, go here.
Q: How did you become interested in systems migration?
A: To me, migrations are one of the physical security world’s great paradoxes. They seem so simple–even the most complex migrations intuitively seem like a series of simple tasks. However, in practice the totality of the effort inevitably breeds chaos. I think anyone’s expertise in the field is usually born from headaches and heartaches, and we all want to spare the industry our version of gray hair events.
Q: What advice would you give security professionals interested in Systems migrations?
A: Slow is smooth and smooth is quick. Start slow, be deliberate, and be obnoxiously thorough, all of which helps you keep moving forward. PACE planning. Always have a Primary, Alternate, Contingent, and Emergency plan.
Q: Why should security professionals have systems migrations on their radar?
A: No one is safe from migrations. When your team is struggling, migrations might be the only way to improve. Conversely, when your team is thriving, the only way to get to the next level of optimization might be to migrate. If you are somewhere in the middle, you guessed it, you still will someday have to migrate because your systems will always age and become a vulnerability, and your threats will always develop to exploit that.
