Doug Walsh and Dr. Serdar Ince sat down with us to discuss their upcoming exclusive webinar previewing Securitas Technology’s 2026 Global Technology Outlook Report. To learn more about the webinar on 10 September or to register, go here.

Q: How did you become interested in security technology?

DW: My interest in security technology developed naturally over my 30+ year career in the electronic security industry. Starting out in both sales and operational roles with companies like Diebold, Stanley Convergent Security Solutions, Honeywell, and now Securitas Technology, I quickly realized how fast technology was transforming the industry. What kept me engaged was the continuous evolution of solutions—every few years there was something new, from analog to IP video, basic intrusion detection to AI-driven analytics. The dynamic nature of security technology—always advancing to meet new challenges—is what continues to drive my interest today.

SI: I worked in academia and research labs as a researcher. My PhD thesis focused on video and image processing. After that, I joined a startup that developed intelligent video analytics algorithms for security cameras. Since then, I have been in the security industry, focusing on new and innovative technologies.

Q: What advice would you give security professionals interested in security technology?

DW: The best advice I can give is to stay curious and committed to continuous learning. Technology in our industry evolves quickly, and being able to translate these changes into value for your clients will set you apart. Make it a habit to attend industry events, webinars, and manufacturer briefings. Build relationships with integrators and manufacturers—I've found my advisory board roles to be invaluable in gaining early insights into product roadmaps and innovations. Most importantly, don’t just focus on the technology itself—understand the business problems it solves. Whether it’s improving operational efficiency, enhancing situational awareness, or reducing risk exposure, your ability to connect technology to business outcomes is what will make you indispensable in this field

SI: The main advice is to first focus on the security problem and identify the specific risk. Begin by defining the process to address this risk, and then look for the appropriate technology. Without proper risk analysis and a clearly defined process, the investment may not deliver the expected results.

Q: Why should security professionals have the threat landscape and incident analysis on their radar?

DW: Security professionals must have technology on their radar because it’s fundamentally changing the way organizations protect their people, property, and operations. Over my career, I’ve seen firsthand how emerging technologies like cloud services, artificial intelligence, and integrated platforms have transformed traditional security programs. Today, security technology isn’t just about physical safety—it’s about providing business intelligence, operational efficiencies, and proactive threat mitigation. With technology driving everything from remote management to data-driven decision-making, staying informed ensures you remain relevant and effective in your role.

SI: As we will discuss in the webinar, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud and Remote Services, Advanced Sensors, and Sustainability are key focus areas for the coming years. Generative AI, in particular, is expected to have a significant impact on our industry as well.
