Stephen Homrighaus of Genetec sat down with us to discuss the upcoming exclusive webinar exploring access control. To learn more about the webinar, sponsored by Genetec and Mercury, on 23 October or to register, go here.

Q: How did you become interested in access control for more than opening and closing doors?

A: For years, access control was seen as a necessary expense – something organizations had to include as part of their security. However, that mindset is starting to shift. Modern access control platforms can deliver a measurable return on investment (ROI) beyond security. True ROI for access control is based on the data it can provide. These insights help organizations make more informed decisions about staffing, audit capabilities in emergency situations, and seamlessly lock down the perimeter during security events. The data is also often used when reviewing an organization's real estate and space needs. Modern solutions are also available to improve access control management. Organizations have options, like Genetec ClearID™, to lower the risk of manual processes and improve efficiency with automated workflows. These options help organizations use their time and resources more effectively.

Q: What advice would you give security professionals interested in access control for ROI

A: Rather than relying on closed access control systems, look for open architecture solutions. Such systems allow organizations to select software and hardware from different vendors without sacrificing integration or performance. Teams can tailor their systems to specific needs and adapt over time without being locked into a single vendor's ecosystem. Look for mobile credentials, enhanced reader technology, both cards and biometrics, to get the data in a way that is meaningful. Unified systems are also important as they allow organizations to create a single, cohesive environment for video, access control, intrusion detection, and other systems. They support faster decision-making, reduce training complexity, and enhance operational effectiveness.

Q: Why should security professionals have on their radar about this topic?

A: According to the 2025 Genetec State of Physical Security report, the number one project end users said they'll focus on this year is access control. The modern workplace or campus looks different from even a decade ago. The threat landscape has also evolved. Older access control systems struggle to keep up. More organizations are realizing it's time to upgrade. They're looking for new technologies such as mobile credentials and biometrics. Modern systems help improve efficiency, protect against cyber threats, gather insightful data, and meet regulatory compliance requirements.
