Public service is more than a career—it is a calling. It demands integrity, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to safeguarding others. Yet, every chapter of service must one day come to a close, whether by personal choice or institutional transition. What comes next is not just a career move; it is a transformation—one that requires foresight, preparation, and the right support.

For many military and law enforcement professionals, the civilian security sector offers a natural and meaningful second career. However, successfully navigating this transition is not automatic; it demands strategy, adaptability, agility, and an understanding of how to translate years of dedicated service into civilian opportunities. The steps taken today—securing the right resources, building professional networks, and refining one’s approach—will shape tomorrow’s success.

“Plans are worthless, but planning is everything.”

ASIS International: Uniting Security Leaders Worldwide

Established in 1955, ASIS International serves as the definitive global platform connecting security professionals across industries, sectors, and career stages. The organization's diverse membership ranges from entry-level practitioners to C-suite executives, spanning public and private organizations throughout the security management landscape. Within this community there are countless professionals who have leveraged military and law enforcement experience to build distinguished civilian security careers, empowering the profession with their expertise in leadership, crisis management, risk management, and operational resilience.

Acknowledging both the complexity and potential of both military-to-civilian and law enforcement-to-civilian career transitions, ASIS International has developed comprehensive initiatives that extend beyond individual career support to include organizational education. These efforts equip employers with the strategic insights necessary to identify, recruit, and effectively integrate military and law enforcement professionals, enabling organizations to fully capitalize on the exceptional leadership, operational, and crisis management capabilities these individuals contribute to the security workforce and the “bottom line” of any business.

Operation Career Change: A Bold Initiative Empowering the Transition to Civilian Security

In 2022, ASIS International launched a groundbreaking initiative: designing and developing a comprehensive suite of career transition resources designed to empower military and law enforcement professionals as they enter the civilian security marketplace.  These tools, created by security professionals who have successfully navigated this transition themselves, provide strategic guidance, mentorship opportunities, and practical frameworks that bridge military experience with private sector requirements. The program ensures that experienced service members and law enforcement professionals can effectively translate their specialized skills and leadership capabilities into successful civilian security careers, strengthening the broader security profession with their expertise.

What began as a U.S.-based initiative has evolved into a global collaborative effort, with military and security professionals from Canada, Brazil, India, Morocco, Nigeria, and the United Kingdom contributing their expertise to develop world-class career transition resources tailored to their respective national contexts and service requirements.

Perhaps most significantly, this comprehensive resource suite is provided at no cost to participants. Sustained entirely through the dedicated volunteer efforts of ASIS security professionals, this initiative reflects a profound commitment to supporting military and security personnel transitions—demonstrating the security community's deep respect for those who have dedicated their careers to service and protection.

Three Essential Tools for a Seamless Transition

  1. Strategic Career Mapping – This dynamic guide allows military and law enforcement personnel to visualize how their career path aligns with civilian security roles. It provides a clear roadmap of industry expectations, key certifications, and leadership benchmarks, ensuring professionals are well-prepared to compete and succeed in the private sector.
  2. Real-World Skill Translation – Military and law enforcement evaluations, awards, and performance reports are rich with accomplishments—yet often written in language unfamiliar to the corporate world. This tool translates real-world achievements into civilian terms, empowering professionals to craft compelling résumés, cover letters, and interview narratives. It also serves as a critical resource for hiring managers, offering deeper insight into the leadership, resilience, and crisis-management skills inherent in those with public service backgrounds.
  3. Bridging the Language Gap – Military and law enforcement professions are steeped in specialized terminology, acronyms, and cultural nuances. While these distinctions are second nature to those in uniform, they can create barriers in civilian career discussions. This tool demystifies industry-specific jargon, ensuring that public servants can effectively communicate their skills, and that employers can fully grasp the extraordinary value these professionals bring to an organization.

A simple shift in language can mean the difference between opportunity and oversight. A term like “Aide de Camp” may be unfamiliar in the corporate world, but when reframed as “Executive Assistant” or “Chief of Staff,” its significance becomes immediately clear.

A Global Commitment to Those Who Serve

The impact of this initiative extends far beyond borders. The next phase of this mission is already in motion, with dedicated volunteers from six countries working to develop these same career transition resources for their respective nations. ASIS International is committed to ensuring that the transition from public service to civilian security is not just possible—but positioned for excellence.

Your Next Mission Begins Today

For those preparing to embark on this transition, the message is clear: you are not alone. These resources exist to empower, to educate, and to ensure that your next chapter is one of purpose, leadership, and continued service—this time, in a new capacity.

To the hiring managers, corporate leaders, and security professionals seeking exceptional talent: look to those who have served. The leadership, discipline, and strategic thinking honed in military and law enforcement careers are invaluable assets to any organization.

“There is nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer.”
— General James H. Doolittle
