The Rise of the Surveillance State

China has a vast surveillance infrastructure made up from video systems, Internet monitoring, tracking, and more. And nowhere is the power of this system more on display than in the Xinjiang region to monitor approximately 13 million Turkic Muslims.

China has figured out how to entwine surveillance with digital governance. Understanding this dynamic has become even more critical as surveillance technology used in China begins to be adopted elsewhere in the world—in at least 80 different countries as of 2019.

Strengthening Surveillance Through Open Standards

Through entities such as the Open Security & Safety Alliance, manufacturers, software developers, and system integrators are working together to solve common issues, enabling innovation and increasing market and business opportunities.
