Lieutenant General (ret) Nadja West, the 44th Army Surgeon General and the former Commanding General of US Army Medical Command gives keynote address

Orlando, FL (29 September 2021)ASIS International, the world’s largest association for security management professionals, celebrated Military and Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (MLEAD) at Global Security Exchange (GSX) 2021. Lieutenant General (ret) Nadja West, the 44th Army Surgeon General and the former Commanding General of US Army Medical Command gave the keynote address, Leading Through Uncertainty, sponsored by Allied Universal. As a thank you for their service, all law enforcement, military, and first responders received a free one-day pass to attend GSX.

In her remarks, General West provided a wealth of insights from 20 years of experience in executive leadership, crisis management, and disaster response — including her instrumental role in crafting the US Department of Defense (DOD) medical response to the Ebola crisis – West speaks expertly on leadership tactics to effectively lead teams through times of uncertainty and crisis.

“Every generation has had its own brand of uncertainty, and now we are dealing with ours,” she shared with attendees. “Unity is a combination or ordering of parts that constitutes a whole or promotes an undivided total effect. I believe this definition of unity applies to what we all must do in any sector or job to propel ourselves, our communities, our workplaces, our nations, and our world.”

In celebration of MLEAD, Wednesday’s From the Battle to the Board: Management Lessons from Female Military Leaders game changer session delivered the perspectives of a panel of high-ranking former military leaders.

In the GSX 2021 exhibit hall, security professionals experienced the latest security products firsthand from more than 300 exhibitors—from access control to crisis management tools to AI, machine learning, and beyond.

Sessions from the technology-focused X Stage in the exhibit hall touched on issues regarding transitioning from the military to a security career, the state of ransomware, and privileged system access.

Wednesday's SM Live featured interviews with Allison Sands of Project Hummingbird as well as 2021 ASIS International President John Petruzzi, Jr., CPP, and ASIS International CEO Peter J. O’Neil, FASAE, CAE.

“We witnessed a historic level of engagement by all those involved in GSX,” Petruzzi said. “From those who exhibited at GSX to those members who traveled great distances to participate in this unique global gathering, I was inspired by the profession’s commitment to this global event and its resounding success.”

O’Neil added, “ASIS International has doubled-down on strengthening and building relationships during the pandemic, and it clearly shows in our levels of engagement. GSX is a catalyst to bring the security profession together to learn, collaborate, and get back to the business of doing business. I am so proud of the work of everyone involved in this one-of-a-kind event in the most trying of times.”

ASIS International announced that GSX 2022 will take place in Atlanta, GA, 12-14 September 2022. For more information about GSX, please visit GSX.org.
