As many of our members know, it is common for military veterans to begin a security career upon conclusion of active duty. It is also the case that veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may struggle with the transition back to civilian life. ASIS member Tim Crockett, who is the Vice President of Security for HX Global and Healix International, is working to raise awareness for these veterans—by rowing across the Atlantic Ocean. Solo.
As part of the 2018 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, Tim is going to row a 24-foot boat for 3,000 nautical miles (4,828 kilometers) across the Atlantic Ocean by himself. This challenge will help raise money for US-based Give An Hour and UK-based Combat Stress charities. Both of these organizations work to raise awareness and provide support for veterans who are struggling with mental illness.
In early December, Tim will depart in his boat, “The Kraken.” His epic journey will take him from La Gomera, Canary Islands west to Antigua. This is considered to be the world’s toughest row and requires a level of mental and physical endurance that few can fathom. For perspective, fewer people have crossed the Atlantic solo than have summited Mount Everest or even been to space.
Tim’s goal is to reach Antigua in 50 days or less, which means he will have to row an average of 60 miles (96.5 kilometers) per day. He will celebrate Christmas, New Year’s and his 48th birthday alone on the open ocean. During the row, he will battle sleep deprivation, unpredictable weather patterns, salt sores, infections and sheer exhaustion.
He will depend heavily on the support of his employer and headline sponsor, Healix International (known in the US as HX Global), whose team provides medical, security and travel assistance to some of the world’s most well-known corporations, governments and NGO’s. The team sponsored the custom build of Tim’s boat, and will be providing him with 24/7 assistance should he require it. A team of doctors, nurses and fellow security experts will be available to Tim for telemedicine consults via the satellite communications system on the boat. They will provide him with the insight he needs to keep up with the required pace and ensure his physical and mental health remain strong.
