News Release

IAHSS, ASIS Partner To Bring Healthcare Security Awareness To Global Seminar

Glendale Heights Ill. 2013-05-06

When ASIS International (ASIS) presents its 59th Annual Seminar and Exhibits at Chicago’s McCormick Place on September 24-27, 2013, it will mark an important first. In their respective histories, the leading association for security management professionals is joining forces with the top organization for healthcare security professionals, International Association for Healthcare Safety and Security (IAHSS) to enhance the knowledge and skills of seminar participants and to support the work and reach of each other’s organization.

While ASIS represents security across the board – from the gaming industry to hospitals to museums to retail and more – IAHSS specializes exclusively in the healthcare security field. According to ASIS President Geoffrey T. Craighead, CPP, it was at the suggestion of one of his members that the partnership idea was broached. “We recognize that we already have members in common, and this is an effective way to provide greater vertical depth for those interested in this specialty,” he says, explaining that IAHSS will work with the ASIS Healthcare Security Council to develop and co-sponsor  educational sessions focusing on healthcare security at the Seminar.

As well, IAHSS will offer training and exams for its prestigious CHPA certification prior to the Seminar. Both organizations will mutually promote each other’s annual seminar and association to their respective members, and IAHSS will host a booth at the Seminar.

Says IAHSS Executive Director Evelyn Meserve, “This partnership is a win-win for both memberships. It shows we’re being recognized as the leading source for healthcare security and are being given the opportunity to make ASIS members aware of what we have to offer.”  She continues, “We’re two large security organizations partnering to bring the best educational programs possible to members of the security profession. We can share our strengths with each other.”

Craighead agrees: “We recognize that each of our organizations has value to bring to our membership, and we can leverage that by lending support to practitioners, expanding knowledge and skills, and providing enhanced networking opportunities.” He adds, “Hopefully, it’s the start of a continuing relationship.”

Over 20,000 security professionals from nearly 100 countries and more than 700 exhibitors are expected to attend the global conference. Some 200 educational sessions will be offered to attendees, along with and numerous networking opportunities. ASIS will offer classroom certification review programs for its Certified Protection Professional (CPP), Professional Certified Investigator (PCI) and Physical Security Professional (PSP) credentials on Sept. 22-23, just ahead of the opening of the Seminar and Exhibits. There will also be a dedicated Career Pavilion featuring information sessions and career counseling for attendees. Keynote speakers include Apple Computer Co-Founder Steve Wozniak, philanthropist and currently chief scientist for Fusion-IO, and the Honorable John Howard, Prime Minister of Australia from 1996-2007.NFL legend and Chicago’s favorite citizen, Mike Ditka, will address the networking luncheon crowd on Friday, September 27.
