Timothy L. Williams, CPP, has advanced to the presidency of ASIS International, the preeminent organization for security professionals, effective Jan. 1, 2008.  Williams brings more than 30 years of experience in security management to the position.  He currently is the director of global security for Caterpillar Inc.

Williams will lead discussions with the ASIS International Board of Directors and other society leadership in a series of meetings to be held this month in Alexandria, Va.  He will outline important initiatives for the organization in 2008, which include security standards development, greater integration of security executives in enterprise risk management strategies, and the continued development of security practitioners in general business concepts to further the advancement of security management practices into business operations.

Prior to joining Caterpillar in December 2006, Williams was the chief security officer of Nortel, where he also served as vice president of business ethics from 1994 to 1997.  Before joining Nortel in 1987, Williams was director of corporate security services of Boise Cascade Corp., and an international security coordinator for Procter & Gamble, with both domestic and international corporate security responsibilities.

Williams has conducted significant research into fraud and related ethics issues and has written extensively on these subjects for Internal Auditor and Security Management magazines and Security Journal.  He twice received the Outstanding Contributor Award from Internal Auditor magazine and the Institute of Internal Auditors.  He is coauthor of the book “Fraud:  Bringing Light to the Dark Side of Business.” He served as the managing editor of the Protection of Assets Manual and Protection of Assets Bulletin.

Williams has often been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Globe & Mail and Financial Times, among other publications.  He received the 2006 CSO Compass Award for visionary leadership in the security field by Chief Security Officer magazine.

Williams was one of the original security leaders who developed the Alliance for Enterprise Security Risk Management (AESRM) in 2004, bringing together the International Systems Security Association, ASIS and ISACA to develop collaborative research and processes regarding the securing of all aspects of enterprise security.

Williams has been an ASIS member since 1978.  He holds the highest certification in the security management profession, that of Certified Protection Professional (CPP).

He earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Toronto and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Cincinnati.  Williams and his wife, Teresa Kitson, live in Peoria, Ill.
