EU Firms Voice Fears of Trade Secret 'Leakage' in China

Confidential data provided by European companies to the Chinese authorities as part of patent applications and environmental impact assessments are being leaked to local competitors, according to the European Union's Chamber of Commerce in China.

There is a growing concern amongst European companies about the "leakage of confidential information," with Chinese government agencies demanding detailed data on the products and practices of foreign firms.

"It is unfortunately not uncommon for such proprietary knowledge to be leaked to Chinese competitors," according to a new position paper published by the EU Chamber of Commerce 's office in Beijing.

ASIS International Information Assets Protection Conference Announced

On 25-26 January 2010 ASIS International organises an Information Assets Protection Conference that will take place in the premises of Nomura in Central London.

An organisation’s competitive edge often is the result of information derived from the creativity and innovation of its personnel. Consequently, the loss of such information would negatively impact the organisation’s investment in personnel, time, finances, product, and/ or property. Whether it is a trade secret, patent information, or other intellectual property; a simple improvement in the way an organisation produces a product or conducts its business; a technical modification, new technique, or management concept; or employee/personnel human resources information, the importance of these assets cannot be underestimated. In the same way, organisations should take data protection as well as the legal risk of data loss into account.

This event, set for security professionals (from both the physical and information security functions) who are seeking to deepen their understanding of a wide range of information security issues, will address a full spectrum of information security topics ranging from:
• Data protection
• The protection of proprietary information
• Corporate espionage
• Online identity theft
• Cloud computing and remote access
• Product counterfeiting and piracy
• Disaster recovery and business continuity

Please click here to view to the latest version of the programme. Sponsorship and exhibition opportunities will be made available on this webpage soon. In the mean time, for more information, please contact the European Bureau.

On the right hand bank of the river Tagus, Lisbon is a city built on seven hills, whose legendary history stretches back over twenty centuries. Lisbon can be summed up in one word: variety. From the 12th-century cathedral to the modern bridges spanning the Tagus River, from the 18th-century Aguas Livres aqueduct to the futuristic Oriental Station, Lisbon traverses the ages. The city's many neighborhoods include Moorish Alfama, home of the city's tallest hill, and 17th-century Bairro Alto, with its hopping nightlife. Lisbon is home to remarkable museums, an impressive castle, open-air markets, funiculars, Fado music and great food. With its cobblestoned pavements and narrow streets full of Art Nouveau cafés, Lisbon promises a lot!

French Data Protection Watchdog Has Authorised the Use of Biometrics in the Fight Against Identity Fraud

For the first time, the National Commission for Informatics and Liberty (CNIL) has authorised the use of a biometric device based on the recognition of the human venous system to fight against examination fraud. It stresses its specific value as through such examinations - mainly measuring mathematical and verbal skills, and evaluating analytical writing - the best candidates enter major business schools or specialised university programmes. This decision has been made thanks to the nature of the selected biometric system which guarantees greater safety and equal opportunities to candidates.

Swedes Seek Common Approach to Flu Pandemic

Sweden is seeking pan-European agreement on a common strategy for containing the spread of Influenza A (H1N1), as the EU gears up for a predicted surge in cases this autumn.

The Swedes currently hold the rotating six-month EU Presidency and are anxious to foster greater cooperation between EU countries amid fears that the pandemic could stifle economic recovery by forcing millions of Europeans to stay home from work due to illness.

Previous public health crises suggest European countries are not always eager to share resources, particularly stockpiles of antiviral medicines which are likely to be in high demand.

Wharton/ASIS Program for Security Executives Enters Sixth Year

ASIS International in collaboration with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, is offering a two-week certificate course for security executives. The Wharton/ASIS Program for Security Executives presents business knowledge taught by many of the same faculty who have made Wharton's MBA program one of the top-ranked in the world.

The Wharton/ASIS program, offered Nov. 30-Dec. 4, 2009 and Feb. 1-5, 2010, will cover the core concepts of business to broaden the chief security officer's managerial and strategic perspectives, enhance business instincts and sharpen abilities to tackle management challenges. Both sessions must be completed to earn the certificate.

Wharton faculty draw upon extensive business expertise and research to address unique management challenges faced by security practitioners. Specific case studies in security management illustrate strategic concepts and key business skills in finance, marketing, management and leadership. To bring lessons on leadership to life, for example, one of the sessions examines critical strategies and decisions made during the Battle of Gettysburg.

"This is a challenging and relevant experience for senior security leaders," says program graduate Vincent Jarvie, vice president of corporate security at L-3 Communications Corp. "The insight to align security objectives with key business drivers results in a significant competitive advantage."

The program will be held on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia. Go to for more program information or registration details.
