On the right hand bank of the river Tagus, Lisbon is a city built on seven hills, whose legendary history stretches back over twenty centuries. Lisbon can be summed up in one word: variety. From the 12th-century cathedral to the modern bridges spanning the Tagus River, from the 18th-century Aguas Livres aqueduct to the futuristic Oriental Station, Lisbon traverses the ages. The city's many neighborhoods include Moorish Alfama, home of the city's tallest hill, and 17th-century Bairro Alto, with its hopping nightlife. Lisbon is home to remarkable museums, an impressive castle, open-air markets, funiculars, Fado music and great food. With its cobblestoned pavements and narrow streets full of Art Nouveau cafés, Lisbon promises a lot!

ASIS International Launches Global Computer-Based Testing for Certification Exams

ASIS International is expanding the administration of computer-based testing (CBT) to 32 locations outside of the United States and Canada, beginning July 1. International candidates for ASIS board certification previously had access only to paper-and-pencil exams.

International security practitioners approved by ASIS to take the examinations for the Certified Protection Professional (CPP), the Professional Certified Investigator (PCI) and the Physical Security Professional (PSP) credentials may visit this Web site. The Web site will allow candidates to identify test locations and to schedule test dates in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia/Oceania. A link to frequently asked questions is also provided as a resource.

"As ASIS looks to enhance its certification, education and networking opportunities globally, the conversion to CBT in countries throughout the world is a natural progression," says Darryl R. Branham, CPP, president of the ASIS Professional Certification Board.

Nearly 2,000 candidates take the CPP, PCI and PSP exams each year. Paper-and-pencil exams will continue for seven sites where CBT is currently unavailable—Ecuador, Jamaica, New Zealand, Panama, Qatar, Sweden, and Trinidad and Tobago. CBT has been available in the United States and Canada since 1998.

For more information on CBT and ASIS certifications, click here.

Wharton/ASIS Program for Security Executives Enters Sixth Year

ASIS International in collaboration with the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, is offering a two-week certificate course for security executives. The Wharton/ASIS Program for Security Executives presents business knowledge taught by many of the same faculty who have made Wharton's MBA program one of the top-ranked in the world.

The Wharton/ASIS program, offered Nov. 30-Dec. 4, 2009 and Feb. 1-5, 2010, will cover the core concepts of business to broaden the chief security officer's managerial and strategic perspectives, enhance business instincts and sharpen abilities to tackle management challenges. Both sessions must be completed to earn the certificate.

Wharton faculty draw upon extensive business expertise and research to address unique management challenges faced by security practitioners. Specific case studies in security management illustrate strategic concepts and key business skills in finance, marketing, management and leadership. To bring lessons on leadership to life, for example, one of the sessions examines critical strategies and decisions made during the Battle of Gettysburg.

"This is a challenging and relevant experience for senior security leaders," says program graduate Vincent Jarvie, vice president of corporate security at L-3 Communications Corp. "The insight to align security objectives with key business drivers results in a significant competitive advantage."

The program will be held on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia. Go to http://www.asisonline.org/wharton/noframe/index.html for more program information or registration details.

CPP Course Kicks Off in Italy for First Time Ever

The preparation course for the CPP examination took place on 28-30 May in Milan. Planned and organised for the first time ever in Italy by Chapter 211, it was proactively supported by the experience of Chapter 208.
13 candidates, all Italian Security Managers keen to enhance and improve their knowledge on international standard best practices, attended this course.

Prior to the final examination, scheduled at the beginning of November, all professionals will reconvene in Milan at the end of October to test themselves during a pre-exam course. Both preparatory sessions took advantage of the precious contribution of Barry Walker, veteran CPP trainer of Chapter 208.

Anti-terrorism Chief Warns of Pakistani Threat to the EU

Pakistan poses a threat to the European Union through the radicalisation of young Europeans, Gilles de Kerchove, the EU's top counter-terrorism official, has warned.

Speaking ahead of the first-ever EU-Pakistan summit in Brussels on 17 June, de Kerchove said that since 2006 there had been a disturbing increase in the number of “youngsters from Europe going to Pakistan for training purposes for jihad”. He said that the numbers could run into “several thousand” and Pakistani cells had been discovered in the UK, Spain, Germany and Belgium. The situation was “very serious”, he said, since those trained in Pakistan mostly returned to Europe to mount their attacks.

EU Plans Tougher Cybercrime Laws

The European Commission is planning to impose harsher penalties for people who use the internet to commit crimes. New rules could see jail sentences for cybercrimes increased to more than five years, from about one to three years at present.

“We need new legislation to fight cyber attacks. Large-scale attacks are on the rise but the penalties . . . are not severe enough to dissuade criminals,” said Radomir Jansky, one of the senior cybercrime officials within the Commission’s Directorate-General for Justice, Freedom and Security.

Still Preparing for the Worst

The swine-flu outbreak is not yet a pandemic, but health authorities fear that the virus could return in a deadlier form later this year.

The world is still holding its breath over the H1N1 virus consisting of avian, swine and human influenza strains that appeared in Mexico last month. Will the virus simply fade out or lead to a raging pandemic? Nobody can be certain, which is a ‘known unknown' that leaves health officials facing tough choices. It is also a test for the European Union's claim of solidarity.
