Integrating Chemical, Biological, or Radiological Resilience into Physical Security Design

​Traditional security architecture and physical security systems rarely, if ever, address the growing area of chemical, biological, or radiological (CBR) threats. This is an area where the traditional curriculum, best practices, and body of knowledge are not fully prepared to address the threat. However, there are a number of ways in which CBR resilience can get incorporated into design and implementation of physical security measures. These include but are not limited to: architectural considerations, HVAC and airflow considerations, Smart integration of CBR sensors, re-thinking building evacuation plans, and management of incidents. Some measures are "low hanging fruit" while others require a serious understanding of the threat and a commitment to mitigate it.

Dan Kaszeta

Mr. Kaszeta is a lifelong specialist in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) terrorism. He is current managing director of Strongpoint Security, a London-based consultancy and is also Senior Research Fellow at the International Institute for Nonproliferation Studies. Dan started in this field as an officer in the US Army Chemical Corps and served many years in part-time capacity as a National Guard officer. His career included six years at the White House Military Office as Disaster Preparedness Advisor and then another six years in the US Secret Service, where he specialized in response to CBRN incidents and VIP protection against CBRN threats. Mr. Kaszeta moved to the UK in 2008 and worked for Smiths Detection before starting his own business. He is the author of “CBRN and Hazmat Incidents at Major Public Events” published in 2012, as well as a number of magazine articles.
