Dr. Thomas de Maizière
Federal Minister of the Interior
Dr. Thomas de Maizière studied law and history at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster and the University of Freiburg. He passed his first state examination in law in 1979 and earned his doctorate of law in 1986.
Before his appointment to the Federal Cabinet, he was at the head of various ministries in Saxony including Chief of Staff, Minister of Finance and Minister of Justice.
In 2005, he joined the federal government respectively as Chief of Staff at the Chancellor's Office and Federal Minister for Special Affairs in the First Merkel cabinet. He was then Minister of the Interior from 2009 to 2011 and Minister of Defence from 2011 to 2013. He was appointed for the second time as Federal Minister of the Interior in December 2013.
