On the 15th of July 2016, a military coup attempted to overthrow the government and President of Turkey resulting in unprecedented violence against Turkish citizens and institutions. The military coup attempt, against a back drop of emergency law and mass arrests in the thousands within all sectors of society of the suspected coup plotters, united the main political parties and public. Turkey will never be the same again. What will the business, political, geopolitical, ideological, security risks and opportunities of New Turkey look like?

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn why the attempted coup occurred and who were the likely organisation and individuals behind it.
  • Calculate what the potential impact will be for foreign investment and businesses operating in Turkey now and in the future in order to make pragmatic and realistic predictions about the stability and safety of operating in Turkey
  • Analyze how the New Turkey's relationship with the US, EU, and NATO can impact relations with Russia, Syria and its immediate neighbours.
