This program will provide a concise summary of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The FSMA requires preventive measures - known as food defense - to reduce Intentional Adulteration (IA) risk from hazards (biological, chemical, physical or radiological agents) intentionally introduced by criminals/terrorists, including insider attackers.  Food facilities must perform vulnerability assessments, identify/implement mitigation strategies, develop monitoring and verification-type records to minimize or prevent significant vulnerabilities identified at actionable process steps in a food operation.  This program will provide key insights into how to do so.  A key to success will be shared with attendees describing the importance of a security partnership with food safety and food quality personnel.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to identify:

    • General threats to intentional adulteration (IA)
    • The required measures under FSMA
    • Common sense solution sets for effective personnel, physical and operational security prevention and response measures
    • Where to source accurate information, tools and resources
    • How to integrate food defense initiatives with food safety measures and effective partnering strategies with quality departments
    • How the FDASC can provide valuable tools and resources
