Martin Deslauriers, CPP, PSP, of Brink’s Canada Limited, is currently preparing for his third ASIS International board certification. Already a Certified Protection Professional® (CPP) and a Physical Security Professional® (PSP), soon Deslauriers will take the test to become a Professional Certified Investigator® (PCI).
“Curious by nature, I have the desire to remain relevant as a leader,” Deslauriers says. “Leading by example and contributing to my organization’s success by ensuring that my skills and knowledge remain on the cutting edge of currency allows me to understand present challenges while properly identifying potential opportunities for improvement.”
Deslauriers has been a member of ASIS since 2010, but he has been a part of the professional security world since before his college graduation. Today, he is senior director of corporate security at Brink’s Canada, one arm of the global security company.
“My career in security started in the early 1990s while I was studying for my bachelor’s degree,” he explains. “A major armored car company hired me as a crew chief. The armored car industry—secure logistics—has been my life for the past 20 years, and in 2005 I joined Brink’s.”
He has moved up the ladder at Brink’s over the past decade, starting out as a regional security director, and now functioning as the head of security for Brink’s Canada. In this role, he has the interests of internal customers, external customers, and employees at heart.
“The main responsibilities that fall under my mandate relate primarily to loss prevention, risk assessment initiatives, and consulting for both internal and external customers,” he says. “I also have the responsibility of coordinating and overseeing investigative activities and documenting company policies related to risk and compliance. Most importantly, my role is to ensure that my team efficiently assists the company in successfully fulfilling our mission and keeping our people safe.”
Deslauriers maintains that both of his security certifications have helped him in his leadership roles with Brink’s. Not only is the knowledge invaluable, but showing his commitment to his industry has helped him gain the respect and confidence of people at all levels in the organization.
“Understanding and applying basic principles is crucial to efficiently perform my duties. Pursuing professional development and seeking a professional designation also speaks for itself,” he says. “Not only does it demonstrate a commitment to ensuring that expertise and experience are aligned with industry best practices, but also it assists in gaining respect and recognition from peers and colleagues.”
In the midst of another rigorous test preparation schedule for the PCI exam, Deslauriers is looking forward to growing more within an always changing and truly influential profession.
“I am convinced that as a risk management professional, I can truly contribute to the company’s overall success,” he states. “Being proactive in generating new solutions or ideas and assisting others in achieving their objectives safely and efficiently is what I truly appreciate. When a team of dedicated people get together and work toward the same goal, they achieve endless rewards.”
