Join me in Atlanta!

04 August 2014

Eleven years ago, I attended my first ASIS Seminar and Exhibits. It was
absolutely exhilarating for me…as has each Seminar I’ve attended since.

I look forward to this event every year and am counting the days until I can board that plane to Atlanta and again be among the brightest minds in security. The excitement of being at the epicenter of the profession along with more than 20,000 of my colleagues from around the world never goes away.

I will not forget, however, that the first ASIS Seminar I attended was also daunting, and my head was spinning with all the choices of educational sessions, the huge exhibit hall, and the dozens of networking opportunities. That’s why I attend the First-Time Attendee/New Member Reception whenever I can….to help newcomers get acclimated to this one-of-a-kind professional development and networking event. This year, the Seminar primer will be held on Sunday 6:00-7:00 pm, followed by the Welcome Reception for all registrants starting at 7:00 pm.

I encourage all first-timers and new members to attend the First-Time Attendee reception to ensure you get maximum value out of not only ASIS 2014 but also all future ASIS seminars!

Unlike in 2003, today we have a great Mobile App that will help us plan our days. This is just one of the many tools that ASIS offers to enhance your experience.

Are you a young professional within security? New to security? Don’t miss the Young Professionals Reception on Sunday from 5:00-6:00 pm—another wonderful opportunity to get engaged in both the Seminar and other areas within ASIS, such as our 29 professional councils (see last month’s column).

These and all the other networking events will help you to expand your circle of colleagues and mentors. I am especially looking forward to  Monday night's President’s Reception at the Georgia Aquarium, which is open to all full registrants and single day registrants.

ASIS has a long history of selecting dynamic keynote speakers and this year is no exception. The line-up starts with Jon Huntsman, Jr. on Tuesday, then Colin L. Powell on Wednesday, and ends with Scott Moore’s closing remarks at Thursday’s lunch. The wisdom and insight shared by ASIS keynotes over the years has been truly inspiring to me and I often reflect on their key messages when I am back in the office.

Choosing from the 200+ education sessions will be tough for sure! But you can be sure that whichever sessions you choose, you will take back the very latest security information, case studies, forecasts, and extremely practical advice.

When I am exploring products or services for my company, I often refer to the resources I collected from the companies in the ASIS exhibit hall! Virtually every industry product and service category is represented there—making the ASIS Seminar a very efficient way to see new products and services on the market. This is a huge time-saver for me…plus I am confident that I am keeping up with the latest trends and technology.

I want to thank ASIS chapter leaders for their support in building attendance for ASIS 2014 within their ranks. Shawn Reilly, CPP, of Duluth, Georgia is even arranging a bus trip to Atlanta for chapter members and students from Greenville Tech. What a wonderful way to encourage our next generation security leaders!

I look forward to seeing you in Atlanta.
