Eighty-five percent of the critical infrastructure we depend on is managed and/or owned by the private sector. This staggering statistic brings to the forefront the importance of planning between public and private partnerships in order to effectively protect these critical infrastructures in the event of a natural disaster or terrorist attack. Two other critical considerations are promoting awareness and having a corporate integrated approach to command and control through an Incident Command System while focusing on communication and leadership. Educating emergency managers to common problems based on best practices, lessons learned, and the principles of emergency management are fundamental to moving forward in emergency planning.
