In 2025, the ASIS Serbia Chapter, led by Alexey Varfolomeev, CPP, CSMP, took an important step toward shaping the future of the security profession in Serbia. Recognizing the need to connect academic study with real-world expertise, the chapter launched a pioneering collaboration with Dr. Zoran Keković, Full Professor at the Faculty of Security Studies, University of Belgrade. Together, they created a program designed to give students practical insights and early exposure to global professional standards in security management, helping inspire and prepare the next generation of ASIS leaders.
The idea for this collaboration grew out of discussions between Alexey Varfolomeev and Professor Keković, who shared a vision to empower young professionals through education and mentorship. They saw an opportunity to bridge academia and industry, ensuring that students could experience firsthand how modern security principles are applied in organizations around the world through ASIS International resources and expertise.
After several months of coordination and planning, the initiative came to life. The program introduced a series of activities tailored for second-year students at the Faculty of Security Studies, University of Belgrade. Through engaging lectures, workshops, and mentoring sessions, students explored topics such as corporate security, risk management, resilience, and global trends shaping the profession.
A key highlight was the ASIS Serbia Chapter’s sponsorship program for outstanding students. Each candidate went through a two-step selection process, including an academic portfolio review and structured interview. The successful students were awarded sponsored ASIS memberships, giving them direct access to local and international professional networks, events, and resources.
The impact has been immediate and inspiring. Several exceptional students have joined ASIS Serbia, contributing fresh perspectives and energy to the chapter’s activities. Their enthusiasm reflects the program’s success and the growing recognition of ASIS as a vital bridge between higher education and professional practice.
This initiative - conceived by Alexey Varfolomeev and Professor Keković - demonstrates how collaboration between academia and professional associations can create lasting value. By investing in young talent, the ASIS Serbia Chapter is helping to build a stronger, more connected, and forward-thinking security community both in Serbia and globally.
This commitment directly aligns with the mission of ASIS NextGen, which focuses on developing emerging leaders, expanding access to professional growth opportunities, and ensuring the next generation of security professionals is equipped to drive innovation across the industry. Through this initiative, ASIS Serbia Chapter is not only supporting early‑career practitioners but also contributing to a sustainable pipeline of skilled, engaged, and globally minded security professionals who will continue to unite, innovate, and advance security excellence.
