Student Writing Competition
In cooperation with the ASIS Council on Academic Programs in Colleges and Universities, the 2008 Student Writing Competition will reward students who conduct research, engage in thoughtful deliberation, and write an academic paper between 3,000 and 6,000 words long on an issue relevant to the security and assets protection profession.
Undergraduate entrants will select from the following topics:
- The Most Promising Technologies to Meet Tomorrow’s Security Challenges
- Adapting All Hazard Planning and Preparedness to the Small Business Sector
- Repairing Security’s Image
- Protecting Information and Intangible Assets in the 21st Century
Graduate students will select from the following topics:
- The Most Promising Technologies to Meet Tomorrow’s Security Challenges
- The Challenge of Securing Cyberspace: Man or Machine?
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Security Solutions, and the Future
- Where Does Security Fit in the World of International Standards?
Papers are due December 15, 2008. Winners will be notified on January 20, 2009. The undergraduate winner will be awarded $1,000, and the graduate student winner will be awarded $1,500. Each winner also receives a complimentary registration to the ASIS Seminar and a year-long ASIS student membership. Two students will win Honorable Mention awards of $500 each and an ASIS student membership. Winning papers are submitted to Security Journal, a quarterly, peer-reviewed publication, for possible publication.
Eligibility
The competition is open to all college and university students, both full- and part-time, studying at an accredited institution and pursuing a baccalaureate or graduate degree. 2008 graduates may participate in the competition. Doctoral candidates are not eligible to compete.
Application Process
Each student’s completed application must be mailed to the Foundation by the competition deadline. An application includes a completed paper e-mailed to bbuzzell@asisonline.org and mailed to the Foundation along with the attached form, an official transcript, and a letter of recommendation from a faculty member. No late applications or parts of the application will be accepted.

Selection Process
A review committee of three persons affiliated with academic institutions will judge the submissions, and at least one judge is also a member of the ASIS Council on Academic Programs in Colleges and Universities. Papers must:
- Run between 3,000 and 6,000 words, not including appendices or attachments
- Be written in English, using one-and-a-half or double spacing in Times New Roman, Book Antigua, or Arial 12-point font
- Employ a recognized citation style, such as Chicago, Modern Language Association, or American Psychological Association
Papers may include illustrations, charts, tables, and graphs.
The review committee will consider:
- Whether administrative specifications were met
- Relevance of the content and specific subject matter to the topic
- Creativity in addressing the issue at hand
- Organization and overall quality of the written product
- Applicability of analysis and the conclusions presented
