Roy Bordes Advanced Security Technology and Our ProfessionRoy Bordes found his place in the world in the security profession. When he passed away on February 9, 2008, he left an unparalleled legacy of knowledge, integrity, and expertise that will be sorely missed.
Over 30 years, Bordes was president and CEO of The Bordes Group, Inc.; a tireless ASIS volunteer who most recently held the position of Council Vice President for Special Projects; and a spokesperson for the security industry, focusing on physical security. |

Bordes founded a consulting firm, The Bordes Group, in 1978 in Orlando, FL, after having served in the U.S. Navy and working as a narcotics agent for state and federal agencies. By 2008, his company had outgrown its Orlando headquarters and included offices in Washington, DC; Nashville, TN; and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Today, the Bordes Group specializes in integrated security system designs, project management, and post-project security management.
Bordes was an enthusiastic ASIS International volunteer at the same time. “As a 30-year member, I cannot say enough about the benefits of membership,” he recently wrote. “My involvement with the Society has produced friends around the world, has helped me to grow professionally, and has provided me an opportunity to work with other dedicated practitioners to advance the security industry.”
Bordes also was recognized for his annual technology review at the ASIS Seminar, as Steve Hunt, CPP, CISSP, noted on his blog, SecurityDreamer, on February 18, 2008. "His efforts to analyze, organize, and demystify new security technologies each year at the ASIS Seminar showed us how to think about innovation," Hunt wrote. "He looked at innovation with a critical eye—never letting us lose sight of the problems we were here to solve. For Roy Bordes, security was not just a job; it was an important service making the world a better place. We’ll miss you, Roy." The press also sought his expert views.
Two awards have been established in Bordes’ memory. The ASIS Foundation established the Roy Bordes Award for Physical Security both to recognize his life’s work and to provide education in the practice of physical security. The Foundation will present a customized two- to two-and-a-half-day program, delivered locally, to an ASIS chapter that demonstrates its commitment to its own growth and to education programming. "The idea is to send instructors out to locations and train larger groups— pushing out instead of drawing in," said Robert Rowe, ASIS Foundation director of development. The Foundation Board of Trustees will select the award winner.
ASIS International will rename an existing award the Roy N. Bordes Council Member Award of Excellence. Presented annually, it recognizes an ASIS member for exemplary volunteer leadership and significant professional contributions to a council.
