Managing Risk for America's Treasures: Multi-Hazard Risk Assessments
of Smithsonian Institution Facilities
INTERMEDIATE
The Smithsonian Institution conducted risk assessments using the
FEMA 426/452 methodology, combined with FEMA natural hazard methodology,
on 30 sites worldwide to determine the highest risks from both man-made
and natural disasters across the entire institution. Over 20,000,000
square feet of buildings were assessed. The data gathered supported
risk management decisions to accept risk or develop new projects
or policies to mitigate risk. The proposed protective measures were
prioritized and integrated into the existing capital, maintenance,
or operational programs and projects. Benefit from the lessons learned
so that you can help protect real property inventory and missions.

Problems and Solutions of Facial Recognition and Investigations
FUNDAMENTAL
The Pennsylvania Justice Network's Facial Recognition software
(JFRS) uses computer technology to analyze and digitally map characteristics
of the human face for comparison against identified offender photographs.
By leveraging existing arrest photographs captured in the Commonwealth
Photo Image Network (CPIN), JFRS can compare and analyze suspect
photographs against millions of arrest, corrections, and parole
images. If no match exists, investigators then submit the suspect
image to the JFRS Watchlist service. The JFRS Watchlist monitors
photographs added to CPIN and immediately alerts investigators to
potential matches. Hear about all the issues associated with planning,
training, and deploying facial recognition software.

Risk Communication: Understanding Your Audience
INTERMEDIATE
The scientific community represents the intellectual capital upon
which national and economic security depends, and, it is an important
counterintelligence/security constituency. Preservation of our global
technological lead is highly dependent on collaborative research,
both foreign and domestic. The challenge for counterintelligence/security
professionals working in the environment of world-class science
and research then is to understand the culture of collaboration
and to communicate the value of critical risk management to the
scientist/researcher who must, by nature and necessity, go "in
harms way" to conduct research. Ultimately, we must find ways
to work within the culture of science, not change it.

covers the core concepts of premises liability to include the legal
status of all visitors to the property, and the claims that can
arise from injury. Learn how these claims can be defended and how
they can be avoided by utilizing proper security techniques.

by the internal security processes.
